Discovery

While showering, Rachel discovered a small lump in her right breast. Normally, she didn't "self-exam" but in mid-Nov, she did. About five years ago, another lump was discovered, but was benign (not cancerous). This time, the results came back and the tissue was malignant (cancerous).

The nurse's call came on Thursday, Dec 29, 2011.

"Bummer," was Mom's teary comment heard by the family in the van on the way to Universal Studios. My stomach dropped. That doesn't sound good. Mom thanked the nurse for her kindness and excellent care and hung up. "The cells are cancerous," Mom said. Each of us let that sink in in our own way.

In the parking lot, we huddled around Mom and prayed--Dad, Craig, Mandy (Craig's wife), and me (Ericka). God is Mom's creator, sustainer, and healer. It was really special to hear faith expressed and watch it support and uplift Mom. Later, the phone calls and text messages began, letting people know. Prayer engines have begun on Mom's behalf and surround Mom and all of us with an amazing "peace that passes understanding."

Her first appointment with the oncology doctor is Monday, Jan 2, 2012.
